Sixty years and counting

A short history

  1. 1966

    Founded

    A small group of Cobourg residents starts NHS to care for stray and surrendered animals in Northumberland County.

  2. 1985

    Permanent shelter

    NHS opens its first permanent shelter location, expanding capacity to meet community demand.

  3. 2002

    Pet Aid launches

    Pet Aid begins providing food and vet support to families facing hardship — keeping pets and people together.

  4. 2014

    Thrift Store opens

    The NHS Thrift Store opens in Cobourg, becoming a key revenue stream and community hub.

  5. 2026

    60th Anniversary

    Six decades of work — and a campaign to ready NHS for the next generation.
